Blogging in Flight to BlogHer 2009

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

I am en route to Chicago to attend BlogHer 2009. I am on an American Airlines Flight and writing this blog because I am connected to the internet.

I am connected via a company called Gogo Inflight Internet, wi-fi with wings. I am connected on my own computer much like free WiFi you can access at an airport.

In flight internet is great.

I love being connected, talking, working, tweeting, and getting things done. I am so glad that in flight internet is finally here. I am able to write emails, surf the internet, be on twitter, etc. I was very fortunate as the person sitting to my left had a free coupon for the service so I didn’t have to pay the $12.95 for the flight. The person to my right used to work for Gogo. He knows all about it and just in case there were technical difficulties, he could have helped. There are none. It is very seamless, painless, easy, and divine. I am a captive audience. I am happy connected. The connection is quite fast and did I mention I am connected on an airplane?

Another part of me is a little sad as I always earmark airplane time for reading a book or just disconnecting for a while. A little shutdown time, if you will.

With in flight internet, flights will never be the same again.

Features Requested

Monday, July 20th, 2009

We had quite a few teachers sign up on Parentella after the article on freetech4teachers.com. We got a lot of positive feedback and kudos. Thank you, we are really grateful to serve.

Here are the 2 features that were requested:

1.) SMS capability: The ability to notify people via text messages when there is new content on the site. The sytem currently sends out emails when there is new content on the site. We think there maybe a way to do send text messages easily and quickly. The downside is that text messages are not free for the users. We continue to research other viable options.

2.) Localization: A teacher requested that a page be viewable in mulitiple languages. We think this is a fantastic idea as language shouldn’t be a barrier in getting information to parents. There are 2 ways of doing this effectively:

a.) The author posts the content in multiple languages.

b.) The community helps and translates the page/post for others.

Both have their pros and cons. Which option do you prefer and why?

It is the Simple Things..

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I was on the phone today with @alizasherman. Aliza is a brilliant marketer, creative, smart, humble–all qualities of an outstanding person. I had the pleasure of listening to her on a panel at #140conf in New York.  Aliza’s company is Conversify.net.

We were talking about Parentella and brainstorming and exchanging ideas. Did I mention she is brilliant?

While I was engrossed in our conversation, my 2 year old returned from his pre-school with him usual, “Mommy, I am back!”. I went to another room so I could continue the phone call. It was a great call. Aliza and I talked about how to get the word out about Parentella, the types of things we should work on, etc.
After the call, I went outside to our backyard where my son was playing with a bucket of water, watering can, and a little cup. He submerged the watering can into the bucket and filled it up with water. He then filled the cup with the watering can. Eventually, he knocked over the cup of water. He was having so much fun doing this and I was reminded of the simple things in life! Our children teach us what matters most in our lives–on a daily basis.

Water

Yes, predictably, he determined that he can skip the watering can. It is a very hot day and he had a good time playing with 3 buckets of water. 3 buckets of water is all it took for him to have a great time.

What are your kids up to this summer? Any fun ideas of simple things they can do?
