The other day, a friend of mine the other day told me one of her children is on the Autism Spectrum. She’d just found out and was very upset. Another friend of mine also recently discovered the same. Yet another friend of mine has three boys and all of them are on the Autism Spectrum.
Over the course of the past few weeks, I’ve found out three families in my circle of friends have kids with Autism. I am pregnant at the moment so you can imagine what may be going through my mind right now. I decided to focus on what I can do to be helpful and supportive.
The best thing I can do right now is to get as much information as possible to help. Here are some questions that came to mind. We discussed #3 and #4 on the #PTChat.
- What causes Autism?
- Is Autism on the rise in kids or are we getting better at diagnosing it?
- How does one get support from schools?
- How to explain it to the family and to get support, understanding, patience?
I found that I had more questions than answers. I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it must be for parents who are in the situation.
It is our sincere hope that we get some answers, resources, ideas, solutions, and support. If you have any resource, website, ideas that have worked for you, please share with us in the comments. Our chat is going to be at 9 p.m. EST on Twitter. We use #PTChat hashtag to discuss and share ideas. Later, we also summarize the resources shared.
If you are a teacher that focuses on Special Education, please share your thoughts and ideas. If you are a parent, please share your invaluable experience to help others in the same boat.
Meanwhile, we will gather information and resources focused on getting help from the school and some shortcuts that will help. I hope to put together a resource packet/book for parents.
