Today, my son came back from school (he’s in middle school presently) and told me that the teacher has asked for $100 for a middle school camp. The $100 amount is an installment.

Conversation #1

Me: How much is the total amount?
Son: I don't know, she didn't say.
Me: Well, is there a paper/sheet that has the information?
Son: No.
I pick up the school (middle school, again!) directory which thankfully we have now (it is given to us in December 2009). The school began in August 2009.
We had a Back to School Night on May 6th, 2009. Hold on to the date. I will come back to it.
I called one of my friends whose son is also in the same middle school, same grade.

Conversation #2

Me: Hi there! Sorry to bother you so late. Is this a good time?
Her: Yes, sure. How are you? Me: I am well, thank you. I wondered if you know the total amount for the camp?
Her: Off the top of my head, I think it is $200, but I am not sure. I don't think there was a sheet for it and I don't recall when they told us about it. My son also asked me for the installment but I don't recall the amount or whether I paid it.
Me: Mentally, (SIGH, I am not a bad Mom). Out loud: Don't worry, I will find out and call you back.
Her: Thank you, that would be great.

Conversation #3

I called another parent. By this time, I really felt like a detective piecing clues together.

Me: Hello, etc. (repeat the above 3 lines from conversation #2).
Her: I think it is $300 but could be $310, I am not sure. They told us about it at back to school night. I think I wrote it somewhere but I can't seem to find it.
Me: Don't worry, I took extensive notes and put the notebook in a safe place.
Her: Me too, now if only I can remember! I am getting older and sure wish they post it on a website so one can check easily. It was almost 9 months ago when we were told about it.
Me: (Sigh, so do I). I will find out and call you right back. I looked for my notebook and found my notes.

I called both of them back to let them know the correct amount. Yes, they told us almost 10 months ago. I am glad that I found my notes that I jotted down about my son’s middle school activities on May 6th, 2009. I would need them almost 10 months later. These are the moments I thank my teachers.

Could the parent in the story be you? Have you ever searched frantically for a piece of paper sent by your child's elementary, middle, or high school?
