Parents who home school their children do so for a variety of reasons. They may be disenchanted with the education options in their areas or feel they can provide a curriculum that appeals to the learning needs of their children. The parents who choose the homeschooling option can find supporting communities online as well as fantastic materials to support their curriculum and aims. With the several Internet tools that are available for free, homeschooling curriculums can be very hands-on and creative. However, some parents struggle with finding the time to decide how to plan lessons or what to include in their curriculum. Without the proper support, the child may not be at grade level if they decide to enter the schooling system at a later date.
That is why this past Wednesday on the #PTCHAT educators, parents, principals, and other stakeholders shared their thoughts on the pros and cons of homeschooling.

Parentella: Let me get started by asking how you got started homeschooling?
heathenmom: We began our homeschooling adventure after our oldest completed kindergarten.
monicabrand: @Parentella why did I start HS? to teach my kids Bible; faith
GaryBrannigan: I applaud homeschoolers for engaging in the two most important jobs in society: parenting and teaching
butwait: @Parentella I am generally happy w/ our son’s public sch experience, but long for more home/school collaboration
monicabrand: @Parentella math always causes much concern for those considering unschooling. Unfortunate.
SandraFoyt: @parentella My son is no fan of math, but I keep introducing him to opportunities where it’s fun / useful. But, I’m an eclectic homeschooler.
SchoolmarmDE: New homeschoolers want classes every day and are always organizing and they burn out. It is kinda sad.
Parentella was created to solve the issue of parent and educator communication at elementary, middle school and high school levels. As part of this mission, we are hosting weekly #PTCHAT discussions to encourage a productive dialogue between parents and educators. We hope you will join us Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST.
You may also want to join Parentella on Facebook to keep updated. We invite you to propose questions for upcoming topics. View the entire transcript here.
