Cable on the way out?

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Have you noticed that you aren’t watching as much TV as you used to? DVR is getting to be a pain?

We also noticed the same and decided to downgrade our cable. We were lucky. We were at the end of our contract with Time Warner Cable. Therefore, we removed all our DVRs and moved to basic cable. Please note that if you are in a similar situation, there is a $45 early termination charge. We had that waived as well, I don’t even want to start.

So you might wonder if are moving to a time also known as my childhood. Fear not, we moved to Netflix and Hulu+. We are thinking about adding CinemaNow. I also am an Amazon Prime member so I can access that content too.

I believe a Roku box lets me access all the above channels.

Why we moved to Internet Media:

  1. With Hulu+, I no longer have to DVR. I know I sound lazy but with kids, work load, and with a need to read, I just don’t have the time. With Hulu+, I have regained my time back. Yes, there is advertising in Hulu+ but I just mute it and go check my Facebook or Twittah!
  2. Netflix, hello my Bollywood buddy: I have been watching awesome Hindi movies that I missed because I live in the US. I think I may have watched all the Hindi movies on Netflix. There is also Mela.com which has more movies but I need to get a Roku box. I will try it out and let you know what I think.
  3. CinemaNow has new movies on demand. I love watching movies so having new releases at my finger tips is very attractive.
  4. The cost! We slashed our cable bill by 50%. Netflix is $7.99 a month. Hulu+ is the same. CinemaNow has movies for rent for $3.99. Those numbers work for me.
  5. NO Contracts: Yeah! I love that I can cancel anytime. It is fantastic. Did I mention there are no contracts with Internet Media?

Time Warner Cable was not happy losing us. I hope they change and offer more competitive pricing. Till then, we are thrilled with our new services.

One thing really bothers me though. Why do I, a consumer, only have 2 options for cable? Time Warner Cable or AT&T. It should be a free market right? I am really happy about Internet media that has truly put the consumer in the driver’s seat.

Facebook versus Google Plus

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Ever since Google+ launched, I have wondered if people will move over from Facebook to Google+, much like people moved from MySpace to Facebook. I saw this picture shared on Google+. I personally would exchange Twitter and Facebook but it made me wonder. Is Google+ where the early adopters, the cool kids hang out?

It has been almost a week since I have been on Google+ and I like it a lot. Ever since I found out that Facebook has little regard for user privacy, I have been very careful to share my personal information such as kids’ photos, names, videos on Facebook even though most of my family is on Facebook. I usually email photos of my kids to my immediate family. With Google+, I feel safer. Friends on Google+ argue that privacy will be even more compromised on Google+ as now instead of Google having to scrape  information, we are now directly feeding it to Google.  I think that is a good point and probably true. But so far, all the control Google+ has given me over my content such as disabling reshare, turning off comments, I feel pretty good. I feel safer. Isn’t perception greater than reality?

I don’t think Facebook will die anytime soon as there are so many people on it and some who have just joined. It is the middle of the bell curve. Facebook will continue to be meaningful and influential in Social Media for a while. However, their disregard for user privacy and default settings (things are public by default) have made users wary.

Will Facebook be able to win my trust back? I don’t really care about the killer feature they launch next week. If I don’t trust them, does the next big feature really matter? We all know that Google will match that feature and probably surpass it.

What matters in the end is trust.

What is Google+?

Google+: Preview

Google+ is Google’s answer to Facebook but way better. I have been using it for 15 minutes now and I can already see endless possibilities and use cases. First, let me tell you why I like it so much. So without further delay, here are my reasons:

1.) It is very easy to use. I had no trouble getting set up and started. I was invited by a friend. I landed on a screen that allowed me to add people to “circles”. I just dragged and dropped the people I talk to all the time via email and I was off and running.

2.) It is easy to share information with my circles. I can post video, photos, etc. What is awesome is the “Disable reshare” feature that prevents people who aren’t in my circle to pass on my photos to other people. Because of Facebook’s privacy policy, lol, or the lack thereof, I seldom post pictures. I always end up emailing photos and videos to my friends and family. I like that I can easily share photos without fear of abuse. for now.

3.) I like the “Hangout” tool. I can video chat with my family and I look forward to testing it with people overseas.

4.) Here is a screen shot of the stream where all the group information appears. You can filter by the circle that you want to see. I like it because it helps me organize my life a little bit more. I look forward to creating circles for my kids’ schools, work collaboration, and keeping it all together.

5.) Clean interface and easy to use and discover how to do things. errr for the most part. A friend of mine had a tough time inviting people. Here is how to do it. To invite people, create your circles. Then go to a circle, post something and you will see an option to email everyone in the circle who isn’t on Google+. This invites people to Google+.

What I don’t like about it so far:

  1. My friend and I were posting things and the “stream” seems a bit choppy and hard to follow.
  2. My battery depleting Faaaaast on Google+! I had my MBP charged and within an hour, it is down to an hour’s worth of use left. Usually, it lasts me 6+ hours on a single charge and the only thing I added today is Google+.

I will write more about it. For now, Enjoy. If you’d like to check it out, leave a comment with your email.

Celebrating Our Environment

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Tomorrow is Earth Day! In honor of Mother Earth, here is a compilation of posts Parentella has done about the environment.

  • In Our Schools:

The Science Club at Bloom High School in Illinois is doing amazing things in terms of teaching students to be leaders in environmentally friendly science.

Parents and teachers communicating online helps protect the environment while simultaneously increasing learning time.

The Alliance for Climate Change offers free seminars to schools teaching about global warming and how to stop it.

Teachers may want to consider a “school supplies closet” where kids can donate leftover supplies for the next class coming in.

  • Food

Bento box lunches are not only fun for kids, they are good for the environment, too!

  • Fundraisers:

Recycling programs at schools not only bring in money, the kids that run them learn important leadership skills.

Fundraisers at schools should reflect our values, and one of our values should be protecting the environment.

At one school, re-selling used prom dresses made the school a lot of money while saving the girls a lot of money, too.

At another school, re-selling used Halloween costumes also brings a lot of money to the school, while simultaneously saving parents money on new costumes.

  • Crafts & Books for Kids:

Earth Day flower craft & “Let’s Celebrate Earth Day” book

Spring Sun Flower Craft & “One Little Seed” book

Recycle used strawberry baskets into fun and useful baskets.

For back to school, make your own book covers out of grocery bags.

Make your own Halloween costume rather than buying pre-made.

At Christmas time, recycle old boxes into fun crafts.

iPad app for kids

Everyone loves a good story!

Do your little ones spend hours writing stories and drawing pictures? Well my little one does, and now he spends time creating them with the FREE StoryKit App on the iPad or iPod Touch. It is amazing to watch how easily he incorporates the many embedded features to make his stories come alive.

The Features

The StoryKit App opens to a bookshelf with the option to read or create books. To get started, your little ones can simply tap on the new book. They can jump right in typing, or they may choose to print words and draw their own pictures to enhance their story. Changing the background color is easy.  They can just tap on the color dot at the bottom of the page to choose a color and then brush their finger across the page to fill it in. If you have photos saved on your device, they can easily upload the images into the book. One of the best features of the App is the audio recorder. Your kids will have a great time recording their voices. You can definitely expect a few giggles as they listen to themselves when they play it back.

Once the story is complete, you and your children can read it or go back and edit. They will definitely want to share it with friends. Simply tap on the share now and email away.

Some Tips for Use

My son used the App to create a persuasive story to try to convince me to buy a much desired toy. He also uses it as a type of reader-response journal for reading comprehension practice.

I created a story about one of our snow days to test out the features. Check it out. Once you do, you won’t be able to resist joining in the creative process. Fun stuff!

We hope you enjoy the App as much as we do. We would love to read your stories. Please join us and share the links in the comments.
