10 Things I Learned from Type-A Mom Conference

Monday, September 28th, 2009

This past weekend, I attended the Type-A Mom Conference in Asheville. I met the most amazing women and had the privilege of getting to know them. It was a very emotional and powerful experience for me. I don’t even know where to begin! I attended a lot of great sessions. My favorite was the Town Hall Style session where the audience was allowed to participate. What a great idea!

What did I learn you might ask? Well, here it is:

1.) The energy you project into the world, comes back to you. If you are kind, considerate, and helpful, chances are people around you will behave the same way.

2.) Be open to learning opportunities. Each mistake is an opportunity to grow. Embrace it.

3.) Be respectful. Things that look easy to one, are not that easy for others.

4.) We are all in it together. Let’s help each other out. As we grow, it is our responsibility to help others.

5.) Don’t take anything for granted. Life is constantly moving us forward.

6.) Have fun. Push your own envelope and allow good things to happen.

7.) There are great role models out there and they are more than glad to teach and guide, if you are open.

8.) If you want more than one brownie, it is totally fine.

9.) Focus on what you do well and keep at it.

10.) Build relationships and keep them. They will outlast everything else. Life is too short anyway.

All in all, Type A Mom Conference is the best conference I have attended thus far. For me, the bar for future conferences has risen forever.

I better make sure that my panel on Twitter and Education at the 140conf is extraordinary or at least comes close. We are on at 8 a.m. on October 28th, 2009. I have a lot of work to do. Session information is here

Twitter and Education: Support us!

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Parentella proposed a panel called Twitter and Education for the 140conf in Los Angeles.

The characters for the panel are Aparna Vashisht, Tom Whitby, Steve Anderson, and Shelly Terrell.

Tom, Steve, and Shelly are the originators of the #Edchat conversation every Tuesday 4 p.m. EST. #Edchat brings together a wide range of participants globally. Teachers, School Administrators, School Leaders, College Professors, Superintendents, Members of School Boards of Education, Parents, politicians and others have all joined the conversation. The previous #Edchat topics have ranged from the role of Standardized Testing in Education, internet filtering in schools to what Schools of Education need to do to better prepare Pre-Service teachers. The most popular #Edchat to date was on the role of Homework in Education with special guest, Alfie Kohn, an outspoken advocate of less homework in schools. (Read more about what #Edchat is here and here)

Aparna Vashisht from Parentella will moderate the panel and discuss Twitter and its role in bringing together educators worldwide to influence policy, changes, and broadening horizons. Parentella is focused on connecting parents and educators to increase involvement in schools.

Some of the topics we will cover are:

• How Twitter is changing the face of Education.
• What it means to tweet about Education.
• How Twitter is enabling global discussions on Education.
• How Twitter is highlighting the good part of Education and what is working now.
• How Twitter will bring together educators and help change what is not working.
• The origin of #Edchat and topics discussed. Last, but not least
Can 140 characters change Education?

While we await confirmation, we thought that it would be useful to show the organizers that all people interested in Education worldwide will tune into #140conf if this panel were allowed. Secondly, Education is critical issue. A lot of changes will occur and bringing people together to start conversations and raising awareness is key.

We are asking for your support and it is simple. Do one of or all of the following:

More about the 140 conference:

In the spirit of the emerging platform of Twitter, Jeff Pulver (jeffpluver) created the #140 Conference.

“At the #140conf events, we look at twitter as a platform and as a language we speak. Over time it will neither be the only platform nor the only language. #140conf is not an event about microblogging or the place where people share twitter “tips and techniques” but rather where we explore the effects of the real-time Internet. The original scope of #140conf was to explore “the effects of twitter on: Celebrity, “The Media”, Advertising and (maybe) Politics.” Over time the scope expanded to look at the effects of twitter on topics ranging from public safety to public diplomacy.” At the conference the audience is treated to over 20 panels and guest per-day, rapid fire style, meaning each presentation only lasts 15-25 minutes. But they are powerful. In the past topics have included the effects of Twitter on Newspapers, Twitters ability to influence music and sports, using Twitter to support the Social Good, and the effects of Twitter on brands.” From the #140Conf Website

Parentella is..

Monday, June 1st, 2009

What is Parentella and for whom? It is an important question that each company must answer.

Parentella is the organized information hub for parents, teachers, and educators, or simply all entities concerned with our kids’ education.

It is only for entities around education.

Once you set up your account, invite other parents/teachers to the group. Here are some of the things Parentella enabled you to do:

Share School News

As an example, everyday I’d ask my son “Hey Josh, What happened at school today?” His response: “The usual”, or  “nothing much” or the “same old”. I talked to other parents, it turns out that their kids say the same thing. Some days are better than others where he tells me everything that happened. I thought it would be great to share this information with other parents.

Ask Questions about Homework!

As one person said on Twitter, remember Algebra in school??

My son Josh got this assignment where he was supposed to demonstrate how to make something in front of the class. Of course, he told us at 8 p.m. the night before. Anyway, we put together ingredients for making Crepes. We weren’t sure if we are supposed to send in ingredients or if pictures of the ingredients would suffice. I didn’t want to waste an egg, milk, butter, flour so we figured we should send in pictures. I wanted to ask another parent but it was already 10 p.m. I thought, it would have been great to have a site where I could post this question and see what the other parents are doing. Of course, this isn’t algebra but can you imagine if you did have an algebra question?

Share information and recommendations

My son’s 4th Grade class required paper for a book binding project. The paper needed was wide ruled 8.5 inches by 10.5 inches. Not going into details, it was essentially a pilgrimage to find this paper. I wanted to post the shop name and location in a central place so that all parents could see it and get the paper. A mom asked me about the books Joshua was reading so that she could get her son to read the same. I had a question about a videogame ”Maple Story” that I wanted to ask other parents. Parenting is social as soon as your child leaves the home to go to a pre-school, school, etc. It is so influenced by what the other children are doing in a school/class. If we are all connected, we can share the trends and help each other.

Family and Group Management

When you have more than one child, it is twice the work to keep up with the news, meet other parents, and keep on top of it. Add in the task of also keeping your family updated, you can imagine all the work that it takes. Parentella is for parents to simplify and organize their kids and keep the information in one place. You organize it, see it, and share it. Time saved.

Online Signups and Feedback

As a parent, life is hard. If you are a parent who also organizes class activities, it gets even harder. Parentella provides tools to simplify lives and do more. For example, you can organize a Staff Appreciation Potluck with an online signup sheet or a Book Fair Volunteer Shift online signup. Create the event, add what you need and post to the group. Done. Parentella will be your assistant and send out automated confirmations, reminders, and notifications. You can also post a poll in your group to get feedback.

Parentella is the organized information hub for all entities around our kids’ education. Come join us as we connect all parents, one by one.
